Michael Jones penulis buku Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed menjelaskan, pertempurandi Stalingrad adalah bencana bagi Tentara Ke-6 Jerman.

A mass grave of German soldiers was discovered in early October in the Russian city of Volgograd. The city, once known as Stalingrad, was the site of one of the most brutal battles of World War II. (Daily Mail/German War Graves Commission)
MOSCOW, KOMPAS.com — A mass grave containing the remains of nearly 2,000 German soldiers killed in the Battle of Stalingrad was discovered in early October, 75 years after the brutal fighting.
The grave was found accidentally by workers digging to install a new clean-water pipe in the city now known as Volgograd. The workers reported the discovery to the local authorities, who then carried out a more systematic excavation.
Military archaeologists recovered the remains of 1,837 people, all of them German military personnel. Horse bones were also found buried at the same site as the soldiers.
Work is now under way to identify the remains. The authorities will then try to trace the families of the fallen soldiers. Once identification is complete, the remains will be given a proper burial in Volgograd.
The mass grave in the Angarsky district is 139 meters long, seven meters wide, and two meters deep.
A spokesman for the German War Graves Commission said they had initially expected to find about 800 bodies. During the excavation, however, it became clear that more than 1,000 additional bodies had been buried together there.
“At the beginning of October, it was reported that 800 bodies of German soldiers had been found in the former Stalingrad, now Volgograd,” the spokesman said on Wednesday, 12 December 2018.
“The excavation is now complete, and a total of 1,837 bodies have been recovered. We also found the remains of horses at the same site,” he added.
The dead horses had to be buried together with the soldiers in order to reduce the risk that disease would spread from decomposing bodies.
The spokesman added that three or four mass graves are found in Volgograd every year. This discovery, however, is exceptional because of its size.
The excavation team also found the soldiers’ identification tags. They are now being cleaned before the identification process begins.
“Usually it is a relief for the soldiers’ relatives and families when they finally learn what happened to them,” he said.
Historians and specialists in the Battle of Stalingrad say the grave provides strong evidence of how quickly Soviet troops attempted to bury the German dead.
Michael Jones, author of Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed, said the battle was a catastrophe for Germany’s Sixth Army.
“A month after the surrender, in early March 1943, Soviet Army Lieutenant Vladimir Gelfand visited Stalingrad,” Jones said.
“In his diary he described the horrifying landscape of a ruined city, with thousands of bodies lying everywhere, literally at every corner.”
According to Jones, Gelfand ordered some of the bodies to be piled up before they were later buried in mass graves.
“The discovery at Angarsky of a grave containing 1,800 German soldiers corresponds exactly to what Gelfand recorded in his diary,” Jones said.
Jones added that he believed that, if Red Army veterans were still alive today, many of them would oppose burying the remains of Wehrmacht soldiers with military honors.
“The remains will most likely be moved to the military cemetery at Rossoshka, where both German and Soviet soldiers are already buried,” the historian said.
“Although it cannot be ruled out that some Red Army veterans would protest against any form of honor being shown to their former enemies.”
