// Lieutenant Vladimir Gelfand, a Ukrainian Jew (not a German National Socialist!), kept several diaries despite a ban on doing so. They reveal the brutality and violence unleashed by the Red Army, particularly against German women in the postwar period. Rape, killing and the urge to destroy are vividly described in these diaries, which his son Vitaly discovered after his death. Although Vitaly takes what the author considers a questionable view of the heroic deeds of the Soviet army, he acknowledges that to understand the present and face the future, we need to know the whole of history. The diaries were first published in Germany and Sweden, and only later in Russia. There is clearly little willingness to spread these truths, which are uncomfortable for the victors. Attempts to conceal the facts continue, including by avoiding translations into other languages and publication in more countries. Just as the Soviet Union dismissed reports of rapes by Red Army troops as Western inventions, and East Germany demanded silence from the "guilty defeated" in West Germany, censorship continues today through the concealment of documents that ought to be made widely available. www.bbc.co.uk |
